This is why I am honored to be able to offer gender consultations for the purpose of letter writing for clients to receive gender affirming care. Navigating the healthcare system as a queer person can feel daunting, frustrating, and discouraging. But, to be able to do so can also be empowering as you seek to come more into alignment with who you are. My hope is that I can support clients in this process and make at least this part a little less frustrating or daunting.

So you’re ready to get a letter for your gender affirming procedure… What can you expect?

A “gender consultation” will typically last 60-90 minutes and can be done in person in Westerville or Granville, Ohio or via video for those in Ohio or Massachusetts. I will ask you questions about your gender identity journey and gather information that I need in order to create a letter that satisfies the requirements of insurances and doctors. You will be allowed to tell me as much or as little as you would like- you should never experience pressure from a provider to do or share something you are not ready to do or share!

As a part of my commitment to making this part of a person’s gender affirming care journey a little less daunting and stressful, I strive to schedule these sessions within 1-2 weeks of your initial contact, potentially sooner. After we meet, you can expect that I will have your letter sent to you (or another professional if you need) within 48 business hours. You’re likely experiencing long wait times in other parts of your care… you don’t need to worry about that here.

Then, that’s it! You can take your letter and share it with the medical professionals that need it. If you were to wish to pursue ongoing therapy services with me, that is something we could discuss. However, this will never be a requirement to receive a letter. You do not have to be a client of mine in the past, present, or future.

FAQs

  • Consultations are $150, due at the time of service. I do not take insurance, so this is considered to be out of pocket. However, I am able to provide you with a “superbill” to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.

  • Not at all! I welcome current or past clients or clients who I have not yet met! Some clients might choose to continue working with Catalpa Counseling for ongoing therapy, while others receive their letter and choose to not engage in any other services. Whatever you do is your choice.

  • Everything we speak about is protected under HIPAA. Your information will only be shared with the providers you allow. The only time I may break HIPAA is if I am concerned for your safety or someone else’s.
